International Hydrologic Analysis Forecasting Course
9-27 June 2008

COURSE INFORMATION

This 3-week class will bring together professional scientists from around the world who are trained as hydrologists or work in hydrologic positions. The class agenda will address current status and future development in the areas of hydrology and hydrometeorology. The class will feature classroom style presentations, open discussions, and hand-on laboratory exercises. The focus will be on the end-to-end process including analysis, forecasting, and communicating the forecasts to users. There will be several field trips that will facilitate discussion with other forecasters, researchers, expert users, and emergency officials. Specific topics during the class include:

•  designing a real-time network
•  precipitation forecasting, measurement, and analysis
•  atmospheric modeling
•  flash flood processes and modeling
•  basin hydrology (including urban hydrology and burnt watersheds)
•  debris flows
•  dam failure
•  stormwater planning
•  hydrologic modeling
•  coupled precipitation/hydrologic modeling systems
•  the U.S. National Weather Service River Forecast System (NWSRFS)
•  probabilistic hydrologic forecasts
•  drought
•  climate change
•  river hydraulics (steady and unsteady flow with HEC RAS)
•  modeling bridges, dams, and backwater effects
•  flood mapping
•  emergency management
•  communication of risk
•  societal impacts
•  the Community Hydrologic Prediction services (CHPS)

Prerequisites:

  1. Basic Hydro DL Courses:
  2. Introduction to Ensemble Streamflow Prediction
  3. Dams and Dam Failure
