Introduction

Remote Sensing Using Satellites was developed under a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). It is intended for undergraduate students enrolled in survey-level atmospheric science/meteorology courses. In related courses, such as earth science and physical geography, the Website could serve as a valuable resource.

The module was designed to be used in conjunction with lectures and textbooks or as a supplemental laboratory activity. Additionally, the satellite imagery, conceptual graphics, and animations found in this module can be reused in lectures, discussions, and evaluation instruments.

Instructional Goals and Applicable Sections

Goal 1:
Provide learners with synopses of essential content knowledge to assist them in developing a basic understanding of the principles of remote sensing, what satellite-based sensors observe, and what imagery is created from remotely sensed data.

Remote Sensing

Goal 2:
Provide learners with synopses of essential content knowledge and assist them in developing a basic understanding of the principles of satellite imagery interpretation.

Satellite Imagery

Goal 3:
Provide learners with synopses of essential content knowledge and assist them in developing a basic understanding of some classic hurricane characteristics.

Hurricane Features

Goal 4:
Provide learners with a well-supported exploratory environment in which they can freely inquire about phenomena, develop and test hypotheses, and make calculations.

Student Evaluation

All forms of testing in this module are for self assessment rather than student evaluation. No scores are collected and reported to you, the instructor. You may wish to construct your own evaluation instruments using the imagery and any content or questions found in the module.

Exercises
Each instructional section (Remote Sensing, Satellite Imagery, and Hurricane Features) has embedded questions and/or exercises. These activities provide students with practice in applying their knowledge and clarifying misconceptions. Hints are supplied and students are not graded.

Explore More
Within the Explore Hurricanes section, there are three hurricanes to examine. Each hurricane has four time periods. Students choose a hurricane, time period, and an imagery type (VIS or IR). Most time periods give students the opportunity to Explore More. Explore More always contains a question for the student to answer. If you want students to have a richer learning experience, direct them to select Explore More.

Instructor-developed Lab Exercises
The satellite imagery and graphics found in this Website can be adapted for student testing or lab exercises. Imagery can be found in the Image Catalog (available from the Instructor Options page). The imagery can be used in an online or offline test or lab exercise you develop.
