We Foster Learning
The COMET Program has over 25 years of experience, and a worldwide reputation, providing innovative educational solutions that include cutting-edge distance learning materials, onsite and virtual training events, and support for advancing scientific knowledge. COMET has a proven record of accomplishment in using new educational techniques and technologies that enhance the performance of environmental forecasters and other professionals, as well as increase the knowledge of public users of environmental information. We strive to stay on the top of the technology curve by continuously evaluating and experimenting with new software and design to match current trends. The program is based on sound science and innovative instructional design, and is well equipped to use new technologies and existing infrastructures to develop effective education and training.
Providing Effective Education and Training
COMET’s distance education activities provide maximum flexibility and cost effectiveness by offering a range of design technological options. These can include quickly produced Webcasts that might capture, for example, a lecture in COMET’s residence or virtual classroom. On the other end of the spectrum is a fully mediated interactive case study with interactive components to strengthen the learning experience. Options are chosen based on:
- Needs assessment
- Audience characteristics
- Learning objectives
- Time constraints (i.e., rapid turn-around needed or time available for a more highly produced lesson)
COMET has complete in-house facilities and capabilities for producing all the media components that go into the production of online offerings such as:
- Case-based lessons
- Classroom captured lecture webcasts
- Narrative conceptual lessons
- Self-contained video sequences involving science and forecasting experts
- Interactive, mediated lessons with sophisticated animations and graphics
- Simulated event-based scenarios
We also host synchronous distance education experiences that reach a dispersed audience. Using web-based conferencing and learning management systems, we offer live webinars and extended web-based distance learning courses hosted through our Virtual Classroom.
COMET also has a proven history of offering effective residence courses in a state of the art classroom and computer lab in Boulder, CO. These courses can accommodate up to 30 students and provide opportunities to learn using the same forecasting tools and modeling tools used in the work and educational environment.
